Here at New Dawn Permeable Paving, we aim to install perfect permeable paving every time for our clients and customers! For an extra special feature, we occasionally install our permeable paving with feature borders made of traditional paving materials such as bricks or cobblestone. But how?
We thought this knowledge base article might help explain, and provide some inspiration for your next project!
Case Study One: Cobblestone borders for a display home
For this project, a multi-award winning builder engaged us to create a jaw-dropping front entrance for a new display home. They chose to use Raven coloured permeable paving in conjunction with bluestone cobblestones for a classic, timeless look.
To ensure the cobblestone headers and borders stay in place with the permeable paving, we install the cobbles on a rebate that is cut into the permeable concrete base. Whilst the base is poured, the rebates are set out and screeded into the permeable concrete at the correct width and depth for the cobblestones. Then, the cobblestones are laid on a mortar bed on the permeable concrete rebates. Finally, the resin bound Pebble Pave permeable paving is laid over the permeable concrete, flush to the installed cobblestones.
By installing the cobblestones and resin-bound permeable paving on the same permeable concrete base, the two share the same structural foundation and therefore cannot move apart from one another over time (which commonly happens with brick borders and concrete driveways).
Case Study Two – Brick borders for a heritage brick house
For this existing heritage home in Armadale, the clients wanted a new permeable driveway to solve their drainage and run-off issues. They also wanted a look that was sympathetic to the Old Malvern bricks the house is constructed with. We proposed a permeable driveway to control and minimise water run-off, as well as some new drainage works with decorative heelguard drainage covers.
The process was the same as the cobblestone installation, except using a deeper rebate on the edges to match the depth of the old red bricks being used for the borders.
Once the bricks were laid on the rebates for the borders, the resin bound surface was then installed on the permeable concrete base. The client elected for “Midnight Gold” coloured permeable paving, with the golden flakes referencing the beautiful colours of the recycled old red bricks.
Case Study Three – Bluestone pavers
For this new home in Mitcham, the homeowners wanted to use a local Victorian bluestone paver for the borders on this driveway. The bluestone, paired with our mid-grey colour permeable paving “Silver Ash” created a beautiful light coloured driveway. The overall effect provides a soothing yet generous entrance to this Hamptons style weatherboard home.
The same process for installation was again followed, using a rebate on the permeable concrete base for the bluestone pavers. A thicker 30 mm bluestone paver was chosen for the borders to ensure enough strength for vehicle traffic. The borders were laid on mortar with a bondcrete admix to ensure maximum adhesion between the paver and the base.
Finally, the resin-bound permeable paving was trowelled over the permeable concrete base to give the perfect finish to this beautiful permeable concrete driveway.
